Europe Day 2015

Europe Day, celebrated annually on May 9, marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration from 1950 which is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.

65 years ago, while Europe was still struggling to overcome the devastation wrought by the World War II, the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe which would prevent another such terrible war between Europe’s nations.

Therefore, Europe Day celebrates peace and unity in Europe.

Traditionally, the EU institutions in Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg open their doors to the public, while local EU offices in Europe and all over the world organise a variety of activities and events in regards to Europe Day celebration.

Croatia, the 28th Member State of the EU, organizes all day festivities taking place on May 9 at European Square in Zagreb which include performances of cultural associations and tasting of traditional dishes from the Member States, presentations of competitions for high school and university students, EU quiz, concert and many more.

SEECEL wish all European, and their friends, Happy Europe Day 2015!
