South East Europe 2020 Strategy – Smart Growth Workshop

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina - in June 2010, the European Union brought forward its new strategy for jobs and smart, sustainable and inclusive growth - Europe 2020. It confirmed five EU headline targets which constitute shared objectives guiding the action of Member States and the Union as regards promoting employment; improving the conditions for innovation, research and development; meeting climate change and energy objectives; improving education levels and promoting social inclusion.

This successor to the Lisbon strategy was envisioned to help Europe recover from the crisis and come out stronger, both internally and at the international level, by boosting competitiveness, productivity, growth potential, social cohesion and economic convergence. In November 2011 ministers of SEE economies adopted the SEE 2020 Vision and tasked the South East Europe Investment Committee with developing the SEE 2020 Strategy based on the five pillars of integrated, smart, sustainable, and inclusive growth under an overall good governance framework.

SEE 2020 Strategy – Smart Growth Workshop was conducted in Regional Cooperation Council premises on 31st January and 1st February 2013 in Sarajevo. SEECEL was represented by Ms Efka Heder, SEECEL Director and Ms Sandra Rončević, SEECEL Assistant Director who have actively participated and contributed to the work of expert group on smart growth pillar of the SEE 2020 strategy.

The main objective of the workshop was to define a roadmap for the development of the SEE 2020 Strategy in the smart growth domain over the next year and agree on the implementation arrangements going forward. The SEE 2020 Smart Growth Workshop has identified the programming level priorities to reach the SEE 2020 targets and discuss their feasibility in the regional context; determine the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders and contributors involved; discuss possible governance structures and monitoring mechanism to implement programmes prepared under the Strategy, and identify potential synergies with other pillars of the SEE 2020 Strategy.
