Stakeholder Conference on the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region in Athens

Athens, 6 February 2014 - The European Commission and the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union, jointly organized a Stakeholder Conference on the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR).

After the European Council in December 2011 mandated the European Commission to initiate a macro-regional strategy for the EUSAIR, Four Working Groups, one per pillar were established.  The main purpose of this conference is to draw up a new EU Strategy integrating the Maritime Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Seas which will cover eight countries: four EU Member States (Croatia, Greece, Italy, and Slovenia) and four non-EU countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia).

The strategy focuses on areas of regional mutual interest, based around four main pillars: 1.) „Driving innovative maritime and marine growth“, 2.) „Connecting the Region“, 3.) „Preserving, protecting and improving the quality of the environment“, 4.) “Increasing regional attractiveness“.

The Adriatic and Ionian Seas is an important transport route for goods, passengers and energy. The resources of the EUSAIR can play a crucial role in economic recovery of the EU countries, therefore, growth, jobs and business opportunities must develop their full potential.

During the two-day conference, various plenary sessions and thematic workshops were held involving representatives of the countries co-ordinating the designated pillars. Presentations of the outcomes of the consultations were discussed among participants.

SEECEL was represented by Ms Efka Heder, Director, Ms Maja Ljubić, Assistant Director, Ms Sandra Rončević, Assistant Director and Ms Sonja Šegvić, Office and Event Manager.
